Spoiler Alert

A Mother's Desperate Hope

The Phone Call

This episode kicks off with a gut-punch. Yu Jingxiang gets a phone call. The person on the other end claims to be her long-lost daughter. Without a second thought, Jingxiang wires 3,000 yuan for travel money. Her other daughter, Xu Zhixia, immediately knows this is a scam. She drags her mom straight to the police station to report it.

A cop calls the number back. He lays out the legal consequences for fraud. The scammer quickly admits to the whole thing. But Jingxiang refuses to believe it. She’s completely devastated and insists the scammer really was her daughter. Zhixia and her friend Zhang Hao practically have to carry her out of the station.

A Painful Secret is Revealed

Later, Zhixia tries to comfort her mom. This is where we finally get the full, heartbreaking story. Years ago, Jingxiang gave birth to twins. Her husband, Xu Dacheng, was in prison at the time. Jingxiang’s own mother gave one of the twin girls away, all without telling her. The memory sends Jingxiang into a full-blown breakdown.

Zhixia manages to calm her down a little. She calls her brother, Xu Zhidong, and tells him to come home to watch their mom. Zhidong is out on a date with his girlfriend, Bichen. He was using a cheap group-buy coupon he had been saving. He has to leave, but Bichen is cool about it. She just packs up the food to take home.

The whole family is on high alert. Xu Dacheng is so worried about his wife that he stays by her side all day. At night, he even ties his hand to hers while they sleep. Zhidong stands guard outside their bedroom door, afraid his mom might try something. Jingxiang has to swear she won't do anything foolish just to get him to go to his own room.

Wedding Bells and Family Problems

A New Couple's Life

Things are moving fast for Shen Mingzhu and Feng Jianqi. Mingzhu goes to apologize to Jianqi’s father. He accepts and says he wants them to have a big, respectable wedding. He wants all their friends and family there.

Back at Mingzhu’s house, her adoptive father, Shen Shengli, tries to cook a nice lunch for his future son-in-law. The gesture is sweet, but the food is incredibly salty. Jianqi has to chug a ton of water just to get it down. Later, he and Mingzhu go for a swim. Her family's house is tiny, so they have no privacy. The swimming pool becomes their only place to get close.

Mingzhu’s adoptive mother, Yue Xiue, sees a missing person ad in the newspaper. It makes her think. She carefully asks Mingzhu if she ever resents her birth parents for abandoning her. Mingzhu says no. She feels grateful. If they hadn't left her, she never would have met her wonderful adoptive parents. To celebrate their engagement, Jianqi buys them matching couple's watches. They wear them around the house, which really annoys Mingzhu’s brother, Shen Minghui. He makes an excuse and storms out.

The Resident Troublemaker

Shen Minghui is a real piece of work. He spends his time pulling pranks on his classmate, Lu Bing. She’s smart and pretty, and he seems determined to annoy her. He even scares her with a small snake. She is not amused.

Later, Lu Bing’s friends show up at Minghui’s house looking for revenge. They mistake Feng Jianqi for Minghui and beat him up. As punishment, Shen Shengli makes Minghui stand in the yard. But Minghui sneaks away. He goes and turns off the hot water while Jianqi is in the shower. When Jianqi yells for help, Minghui throws the snake into the bathroom. Jianqi completely panics, and Minghui just hides and laughs.

We also learn that Minghui is a terrible student. He’s already repeated his senior year of high school three times, and his grades are still at the bottom of the class. His teacher calls for a meeting, but his parents are too busy to go. They send Mingzhu instead. The teacher tells her that Minghui needs to get serious if he ever wants to pass and get into college. So, Mingzhu begs Jianqi to tutor him. Jianqi really doesn't want to, but she wears him down, and he finally agrees.

An Unlikely Alliance Forms

The Tutoring Disaster

Before the tutoring can start, Shen Shengli and Yue Xiue make Minghui release the snake. Then, Jianqi reluctantly begins the first lesson. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Minghui immediately tries to mess with him, lying that he put the snake in Jianqi's pocket. Jianqi freaks out, and Yue Xiue has to yell at her son.

Jianqi decides to try a different approach. He challenges Minghui to a contest. Minghui, thinking Jianqi is just a bookworm, agrees to arm wrestle him. He loses. Badly. Annoyed, Minghui goes out drinking with his friends to blow off steam.

A Stolen Car and a Change of Heart

While this is happening, Jianqi’s mother, He Lihua, gets suspicious of her husband. He’s out late for a "business dinner." She follows him to a hotel and sees him eating with a business partner, Li Jun. Relieved, she starts to leave. On her way out, she spots Jianqi’s car parked on the street. Nearby, she sees Shen Minghui drinking with some sketchy-looking friends.

She tries calling Jianqi, but he's asleep and doesn't answer. So, He Lihua takes matters into her own hands. She goes home, grabs the spare key, and drives the car away herself.

When Minghui is done drinking, he comes out and finds the car is gone. He checks the security footage, sees He Lihua took it, and has to walk home. Meanwhile, Jianqi wakes up and calls his mom back. She scolds him for letting someone like Minghui borrow his car. But Jianqi defends him. He tells his mom that Minghui is a good person underneath it all.

Minghui gets home just in time to overhear the entire conversation. He hears Jianqi sticking up for him. For the first time, he starts to see his sister's fiancé in a new light.
