Making Peace with the Past
Things start off tense at the house. Jiang Mu sneaks into the guest room to see Jin Chao because neither can sleep. She wants to talk to her mom, Jiang Yinhan, and clear the air. Jin Chao is just happy he didn't get kicked out yet. But then Jiang Yinhan catches them hugging in the doorway. She sends Jiang Mu straight back to her room.
Jiang Yinhan goes outside to prune her plants. Jin Chao follows her. She hands him the shears. This isn't really about gardening. She starts talking about her marriage to Jin Chao’s father, Jin Qiang. She likes to get things done immediately. He was a procrastinator. They fought over everything. She loved her plants. He thought they were useless.
She tells Jin Chao what she taught him as a kid. A man needs to take responsibility. You solve problems. You don't run away. Jin Chao just listens and cuts the branches. She asks if he blames her. He doesn't answer directly. Instead, he repeats a gardening lesson she taught him years ago. You have to thin out the dense leaves so the plant can breathe. That makes Jiang Yinhan smile.
She admits she spoiled Jiang Mu. She tells him he doesn't always have to give in to her daughter. Then she notices his hands are freezing. She rubs them to warm him up. That small gesture breaks him. Jin Chao tears up on the spot.
The Ice Melts
The next morning feels completely different. Jiang Mu wakes up and looks for Jin Chao. She finds him in the yard gardening with her mom. It looks like a perfect picture of happiness. Jiang Mu worries he is still sad, but he assures her he isn't going anywhere.
The mood shifts to celebration. Everyone helps decorate for Chinese New Year. Chris’s child comes back to join them. They paste up spring couplets. Jin Chao’s good handwriting finally comes in handy. Jiang Yinhan has fully warmed up to him. She even serves him soup personally at dinner.
Later that night, Jiang Yinhan is knitting. Jin Chao brings her tea. She tries to give his dowry money back. She knows he has no parents to help and feels bad about the pressure. Jin Chao refuses. He puts the money back in her hands. She agrees to save it for them instead.
The Scarf
The goodbye is emotional. Jiang Yinhan gives Chris a bag to hand to Jin Chao. She gives Jin Chao a hug. Then she takes Jiang Mu’s hand and places it firmly in Jin Chao’s hand. It is her official blessing.
We get a look at the past. Years ago, Jiang Yinhan knitted a scarf for little Jiang Mu. She stayed up late to knit one for Jin Chao too, even though he said he wasn't cold. She divorced his dad before she could give it to him.
At the airport, Jin Chao opens the bag Chris gave him. It is that scarf. There is a note, too. She apologizes for making him wait eighteen years for it. She asks him to take good care of Jiang Mu.
The Great Escape
Jin Chao doesn't waste time. He gives Jiang Mu a new keychain. It has the phrase "Thinking of you day and night" on it. It also holds a ring. He proposes right there. Jiang Mu jokes that it is too fast since they have only been dating a few months. Jin Chao corrects her math. He counts the past. They have been together for eight years. She says yes.
The pre-wedding parties get wild. Wan Qing and Nana are the bridesmaids. San Lai and Jin Fengzi are the groomsmen. Jiang Mu gives a speech about how happy she is. Her love and her youth are right beside her.
The wedding morning is a disaster. Jin Chao is dressed up and nervous. But his groomsmen are all hungover and passed out. Jiang Mu goes to find her bridesmaids. They are also out cold from the night before. Jin Chao decides they don't need anyone else. He grabs Jiang Mu. They hop on a motorcycle and ride off together. Just the two of them.
