The Watcher in the Dark

We start with a mystery man named Qi Sizhe. He wears a black hoodie and lurks in the shadows. He watches a strange man staring intently at a streetlamp. This strange man eventually heads to a club called the 788 Nightclub. Things go south quickly. The man hallucinates. He pulls a knife and stabs a girl on the dance floor.

Police officers Wan Guoxin and Zhu Qingyue rush to the scene. Officer Han Feng gets there first. The club is pure chaos. People are screaming and running. Han Feng spots the suspect on the rooftop parking lot. The guy is totally out of it. He screams about someone not letting him go. He climbs the railing to jump.

Han Feng talks him down for a second. Then his flashlight dies. The suspect panics and jumps. Han Feng catches his hand just in time. The man begs for his life. Then the hallucinations hit again. He fights Han Feng’s grip. Wan Guoxin thinks fast. He pushes a cart full of trash under the drop zone. The man falls. He hits a billboard and lands in the cart. He is in a coma, but he is alive.

The New Forensics Chief

Qi Sizhe shows up at the Hecheng City Public Security Bureau. He is the new Director of Forensics. Chief Bai Nian asks why he came back. Qi lies. He says he just wanted a new environment. He meets his team in the hallway. There is a forensic doctor named Gao Yuan and an intern named Qiu Lanzi. Qi learns the jumper’s blood sample is ready. He rushes to the lab immediately.

The jumper is named Li Yiqi. Surveillance shows Li met with a drug dealer named Jiang Fei at the club. Qi Sizhe insists on testing the blood himself. He runs into Han Feng and Zhu Qingyue outside. Han Feng tries to talk to him. Qi ignores him completely. He only greets Zhu Qingyue.

The police catch an addict named Wang Qiang. He identifies the dealer, Jiang Fei. The lab results come back for Li Yiqi. He is clean. He didn't even test positive for a specific drug Qi was looking for called "Original Diamond." Dr. Zhao explains this drug. It damages the brain and causes violent hallucinations. A sixteen-year-old girl took it years ago and became a vegetable.

A Dead Dealer and a Dead Intern

Qi Sizhe has a secret board covered in photos of Jiang Fei. He is running his own private investigation. He tracks Jiang Fei to his apartment. Han Feng leads a team to raid the same apartment. They find Jiang Fei dead in the bathtub.

There are no external wounds on the body. Qi Sizhe says it looks like an accidental death. Han Feng challenges him. He asks why Qi transferred here. Qi fires back. He asks why Han Feng switched from narcotics to criminal investigation. Neither answers.

Han Feng thinks the cases are linked. Zhu Qingyue warns him about jurisdiction. They check the surveillance video. A man in black visited Jiang Fei’s building. That same man was at the nightclub.

Then the situation explodes. The intern, Qiu Lanzi, dies right inside the forensics lab. Han Feng immediately suspects Qi Sizhe. Chief Bai demands answers. Zhu Qingyue points out the facts. Qi Sizhe was at every crime scene. He was the last person to see Qiu Lanzi alive. They think the intern found something on the dead dealer's body.

The Interrogation

Qiu Lanzi died from acute cyanide poisoning. Qi Sizhe remembers their last moment. They bumped into each other on the stairs. She picked up his water bottle for him. Han Feng and Zhu Qingyue bring Qi in for questioning. Qi refuses to talk until the autopsy and water test results come back. The results arrive. Qiu Lanzi definitely died of cyanide. However, Qi’s water bottle and personal items are clean.
