Into the Heat: Episode 23

Spoiler Alert

The episode kicks off with Liu Ziming finally having a moment of clarity. Growing up, the guy clearly missed the memo on how to cherish people or, you know, communicate. He cops to totally failing Fang Tingting and genuinely begs for a do-over. Fang Tingting’s response? Tears, and lots of them, but no immediate answer. Ouch.

Meanwhile, the police grind pays off! Li Na finally cracks under pressure and spills the beans on Chen Tao. Turns out, he was manipulating minors into committing robberies. She even hands over recordings of Chen Tao brainwashing them. When Zhao Dali plays this lovely soundtrack for Chen Tao, he knows the game is up and, classy as ever, just starts screaming at Li Na.

Back to Liu Ziming, who has a heart-to-heart with Fang Tingting. It seems to light a fire under him, and he throws himself back into work. First up: a new murder case. He, Xia Yu, and Li Yugang head to the scene where a woman named Lin Jing has confessed to killing her husband. Her reason? The guy was insanely jealous, forbade her from speaking to any other men, and generally made her life a prison. Lin Jing snapped. As they take her away, Liu Ziming overhears the neighbors gossiping, and it clearly hits him hard.

Later, Liu Ziming is over at Liu Ziqing’s place for dinner when little Diandian starts asking for her mom. Perfect timing, right? Fang Tingting calls Liu Ziming, not for a chat, but to drop the bomb: she’s thought it over and is sticking with the divorce. She even has the papers ready. The big sticking point? Fang Tingting wants full custody of Diandian, and Liu Ziming is having none of it. He tells her to think again.

Just when you think his day can't get worse, Liu Ziming gets a call about another murder and rushes off. Fang Tingting then calls to meet, and he agrees, probably hoping for a less intense conversation. The new victim, Zhao Tiancheng, was stabbed to death in a hallway with a rare triangular blade. Liu Ziming starts checking the building’s underground garage, while Xia Yu and Li Yugang canvass the neighbors. Suddenly, Liu Ziming gets a frantic call from Nizi – Liu Ziqing has collapsed! He has to bolt, asking his colleague Qiangzi to cover the crime scene.

Qiangzi finds Liu Ziqing in a pool of blood. Liu Ziming, rushing to the hospital, gets Qiangzi to bring her in. The diagnosis? Stomach bleeding leading to shock, and she needs blood, stat. Liu Ziming has to call Xiao Qing for help. While all this is happening, Fang Tingting’s been waiting for Liu Ziming. She calls, understandably annoyed he stood her up, and he has to break the news about Liu Ziqing’s emergency.

At the hospital, Liu Ziming is a wreck, zoning out in the hallway, flashing back to the trauma of his mother's fatal car accident. A doctor snaps him out of it – he needs to sign consent for Liu Ziqing’s surgery. Liu Yang shows up with money, remembering Liu Ziming had asked him to give some to Li Wei earlier (which he hadn't managed to do). Liu Ziming only wants to take 10,000 yuan, but Liu Yang, knowing he needs much more, leaves him with an additional 100,000.

Good news: Liu Ziqing pulls through surgery! Bad news: when Liu Ziming goes to pay, he realizes the money Liu Yang left is gone. Stolen! Xia Yu arrives, and Li Yugang immediately starts checking hospital security footage. They spot the thief, but the face is obscured. Li Yugang vows to find this lowlife. In the meantime, Xia Yu and Li Yugang pool their own cash to help Liu Ziming out.

With Liu Ziqing recovering, Liu Ziming sends Xia Yu and Li Yugang to hunt for the killer while he stays by his sister's side. Li Yugang, true to his word, actually tracks down the hospital thief and calls Liu Ziming with the news. This seems to give Liu Ziming some perspective. He finally figures out his priorities regarding the divorce: he’ll agree to it, but only if Fang Tingting gives up custody of Diandian. When Fang Tingting questions if he even cares about Diandian, Liu Ziming shuts her down by perfectly reciting Diandian’s daily schedule and extracurricular activities. Mic drop.

So, Liu Ziming and Fang Tingting head to the Civil Affairs Bureau to make the divorce official. Afterwards, Fang Tingting visits Diandian for a tearful goodbye; she’s heading abroad with her father for his medical treatment.

On the murder case front, Li Yugang asks the community security captain about the triangular blade. The captain recognizes it, saying a former security guard used to play with that kind of knife. Liu Ziming brings the ex-guard in. He admits the knife was his but claims it was stolen a while back. He suspects a former co-worker, He Shun, who had visited his home, might have taken it.

Liu Ziming gets Li Yugang to dig into He Shun’s background. Turns out, He Shun worked as a security guard in Zhao Tiancheng’s complex six months prior but then quit. Wasting no time, Liu Ziming, Xia Yu, and Li Yugang track He Shun to his hometown and arrest him on the spot.
