Spoiler Alert

A Problem with Ships

Wu Shi has a big problem. He needs to get 30,000 troops back to Taiwan. That requires five transport ships. He goes to Director Ma to borrow them. Ma tells him no. The ships are busy. They're moving military supplies to Zhoushan for Zhou Zhirou. Wu Shi is told to wait a couple of days.

He doesn't buy it. He suspects this is connected to a secret air force meeting. Zhoushan is a critical naval defense point. Something is up. Wu Shi decides he needs to see for himself. He grabs Nie Xi and they head for the docks.

The Investigation

A ship just returned from Zhoushan. Wu Shi confronts Director Ma right there on the pier. He insists on using that ship for his troops. Ma again refuses. He says it's needed for supplies. Wu Shi is done asking politely. He boards the ship anyway, with Nie Xi right behind him.

While they're on board, Wu Shi spots sailors cleaning out oil drums. This is the clue. He gives Nie Xi a look. It means "stay here and find out what's going on." Wu Shi then drags Director Ma off the ship to distract him. Nie Xi talks to a sailor. He learns the ship was carrying aviation kerosene to Zhoushan.

Wu Shi puts the pieces together. The secret meeting. The aviation fuel. He figures out Chiang Kai-shek's desperate plan. They're going to use the air force to bomb Shanghai.

And he's right. We see Chiang Kai-shek give the order directly to Zhou Zhirou. He stresses that it must be kept absolutely secret.

A New Mole and an Exit Plan

While all this is happening, Gu Zhengwen is working his own angle. He takes a man named Weng Lianwang to a local school. He tells him a story about a teacher who was arrested there. Gu's plan is simple. He wants Weng to impersonate that teacher. His mission is to get inside a trading company. He needs to investigate two men, Zhang Hao and Lin Yiliang. Weng is terrified. Gu just tells him to start memorizing the teacher's life story.

Back with Wu Shi, he now has this explosive information. He has to get a warning to the mainland. He tells Nie Xi to get their courier, Zhu Feng, out of Taiwan. Her mission is over. It's too dangerous. He also asks for a new, professional courier to be sent over.

Nie Xi meets Zhu Feng. He gives her a special pass to get her to Hong Kong. He tells her to leave as soon as possible.

Zhu Feng's Own Mission

Zhu Feng is not happy about this. She gave up an important job in Shanghai to take this risk. She feels like she hasn't accomplished anything yet. She refuses to just run away.

She sees a notice in the paper. An old classmate, Yin Xuefen, is involved with a charity sale for military families. This is her opening. She tries to call Yin, but she's moved. Zhu Feng knows Yin is from Ningbo. So she goes to the best Ningbo restaurant in the city and just waits. For three days, she waits. Finally, Yin Xuefen walks in.

They catch up after years apart. Zhu Feng says she wants to help with the charity. She really wants to meet the wives of the high-ranking officers. Yin is happy to help. She invites Zhu Feng to a private party.

Making Friends in High Places

Yin takes Zhu Feng to a party at the Dou residence. It's a house full of officers' wives. Zhu Feng comes prepared. She gives the hostess, Mrs. Dou, a gift of expensive American cosmetics. Mrs. Dou is thrilled.

Then, Wang Bikui arrives. You might know her as Wu Shi's wife. The hostess mentions she specifically didn't invite another woman who gossips too much. Wang Bikui is introduced to Zhu Feng. They all sit down to play mahjong and drink.

After a few drinks, Yin sings a song. Then Mrs. Dou asks Wang Bikui to perform. She says no, claiming a sore throat. So Zhu Feng volunteers. She sings beautifully. Wang Bikui is captivated. She can't help herself and gets up to sing a duet with Zhu Feng. They are amazing together. Everyone is impressed.

After the performance, Zhu Feng and Wang Bikui start talking. They hit it off instantly. They chat like they've known each other for years.

Later, Wang Bikui gets home. She's humming a tune and seems incredibly happy. Wu Shi notices. She tells him she made a wonderful new friend. She promises to introduce them soon. Wu Shi hasn't seen his wife this joyful in a long time. He just smiles and tells her to keep singing. The irony is just staggering. His wife's new best friend is the spy he's trying to get out of the country.

The episode ends on a completely different note. Nie Xi is at a street stall trying to eat breakfast. Suddenly, an old soldier starts shooting wildly in the street. People run for their lives. Li Qing happens to be nearby and dives for cover. Nie Xi has to act. He moves in and takes the shooter down.
